George
Thomas Roebuck II was the first son of George Thomas Roebuck I and Annie Louisa
Roebuck (nee Moore), and was Cynthia's oldest brother.
He was born on 24th December 1896, at 14 Spring Street, Rotherham, South Yorkshire.
The first photo we have of him, on the left, is a studio portrait taken with the family, probably in about 1916. He is the soldier in the centre of the back row. This was probably taken when he was just passing out of his Army training. On a separate page elsewhere in this index there is more information about his military career.

Right: This photo of George is difficult to date - is he the teenager who has not yet been to war, or has he come back, a bit older and filled out a little more in the face? It would be interesting to find out the meaning of the badge on his lapel. Do not let the photographic style fool you - the white surround, or vignette, really belongs to the 1890s.

Left: It is written on the back of this photo that it was taken in about 1920. George is of course on the right, next to his paternal grandmother Ellen Roebuck (nee Holliday, who was Obadiah's wife). The lady on the left is Evelyn Sellars, whom George was to marry. Evelyn was born on 21st April 1899, place unknown. The family was still living in the Rotherham area of South Yorkshire when this picture was taken, and the back garden setting suggests that his younger brothers have started their photographic careers!

Right: This photo is marked as having been taken in 1924 before George married Evelyn. There are flowers in bloom, and they got married in the September, which means it was the summer. Grace must have confirmed this, as she was there, on the left, and Cynthia is the toddler in the middle, too young to remember! Evelyn is on the right. The houses behind show that this photo was taken at The Crescent, Chorley, of which we will show a modern picture when we get that far - it is all still there!

Left: George and Evelyn got married on 6th September 1924, somewhere within Eccleshall "B" District of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Noteworthy here is their clothing: George is wearing shoes called spats which were up to the minute. Evelyn's dress is the straight style favoured in the 1920s, with either a dropped waist, or A-line with no waist at all. The relative lack of material in the dress is a reflection of post-war austerity. Note that she is now allowed to show her ankles, although covered.

Right: Still at George and Evelyn's wedding, they are shown here with some of their siblings. To the left of George is his brother Wilfred (these two are also depicted on the "World War I soldiers" page), and on the far left is sister Grace. The two ladies on the right are Evelyn's sisters.

Left: This picture of the same wedding looks nicely informal and unofficial. Just to the left of George, in the bow tie, is Wilf again. Just in front of him is George's mother, Annie Louisa Roebuck, with baby daughter Cynthia crying on her lap. On the right hand edge of the picture, in the hat with the zig-zags on it, is Hannah Moore, who is Annie Louisa's mother, and therefore George's grandmother on his mother's side. Just below Hannah, in the bottom right hand corner, is Dallas Scholes. She is the daughter of Florence Scholes, who is Annie Louisa's sister, and grand-daughter of Hannah.

Right: This picture of George and Evelyn could have been taken towards the end of the 1930s - we think that George is approaching 40 years old.

George and Evelyn had one daughter, Mavis, who was born on 17th August 1928, at 81 Huntingtower Road, Ecclesall, Sheffield.
Left: This photo is marked as having been taken in 1938. George is in the middle, with young Mavis aged about 10 on the right, and Cynthia aged 16 on the left.
George Thomas Roebuck II was an insurance agent, and then a camera technician by trade. He died of a heart attack on 14th October 1963, at the family home at 58 St Andrew's Crescent, Windsor, Berkshire. Evelyn survived him by quite a long way, and remained at that address for some years, but passed away on 13th January 1994 in Surrey.
