Annie Louisa Roebuck (nee Moore)

Back to Roebuck index

Annie Louisa was Cynthia's mother.  She was one of ten children born to Francis and Hannah Moore, who are depicted elsewhere in this album.  Annie Louisa was born on 3rd June 1878 at Blaenavon, Monmouthshire.  Her father's family had lived in that area for some time, but her mother came from Devon.  In those days of relative lack of mobility, we wonder why Hannah moved from Devon, and particularly why the Moores eventually moved to South Yorkshire just before Annie Louisa was born, half their children being born in Wales, and the rest in South Yorkshire.  Father Francis Moore is described as an iron miner - was mining the motivating factor?

Annie Louisa married George Thomas Roebuck I on 14th September 1896, at St Mary's Church, Rawmarsh, near Rotherham, South Yorkshire.  She was a housewife and mother.  Cynthia did not know her well, as she died when she was three.   Cynthia's remembrance of the funeral was that she was taken next door for the day and given a full bag of sweets, which was un-heard of.

Left: This picture of Annie Louisa has details marked on the back.  It was taken in July 1915 at Seamans, Pinstone Street, which is one of the main shopping streets of Sheffield today. At that time Annie Louisa was 37 years old.   Her light coloured, decorated blouse and long skirt are characteristic of the late Edwardian times.  She is wearing a wedding ring and other jewellery on her left hand.  Also on this occasion were taken photos of daughter Grace and son Billy.

Right: This picture, probably a studio portrait, must have been taken during the First World War, and the photo which Annie is looking at is said to be her son, George Thomas II.  She is wearing a blouse and skirt of two different colours, probably neither black, and the trimmed collar of her blouse is contemporary.

Left: Annie Louisa attends the wedding in 1924 of her eldest son, George Thomas Roebuck II.  Her cloche hat is very much in fashion, and the lace-trimmed, light-coloured dress is very much of the time.  The child on her lap must be Cynthia, who would be two years old.

Right: This undated photo of Annie Louisa is similar to one taken of her husband, George Thomas I, and might be dated in the first half of the 1920s, making her in her 40s.  One of her sons may well have tried his hand at composing the photo around the garden feature.  Note that hemlines were beginning to rise above ankle level as the 1920s went on, but still boots or stockings would cover most women's ankles.

Left: This photo must be of similar date to the last one.  Note that a favourite, or best, locket is in evidence, which has been on nearly every photo so far.  Annie Louisa had a small amount of modest gold jewellery, which was passed on to future generations.

Left and Right: A couple of snapshots of Annie Louisa taken from larger groups. The first photo on the left was taken on a family day out, where daughter Grace, also present, is a teenager, dating it during the 1920s. The other one is from a boarding house photo of similar date, as Grace is again present.

Annie Louisa died of an haemorrhage in Chorley Hospital, Park Road, in 1925.
