Old Roebuck family photos - 19th century to approx 1960s

Background to the Albums

Cynthia Clare (nee Roebuck) lived between 1922 and 1999. Born in Lancashire, England, she trained as a draughtsman's tracer, and moved to Coventry with her brothers and fiance as the Second World War broke out. After the War, married to Walter now, she lived briefly near Southampton, returning to Coventry for some years. She then moved to Kent, and then back to her birthplace near Chorley, also living briefly in Spain. Cynthia and Walter have four children, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter died in 1977.

Cynthia was the youngest of a large family, the Roebucks from South Yorkshire, who were very close, although increasingly dispersed geographically. Nevertheless all the Roebuck children and grandchildren can remember gatherings, formal or informal, where gallons of tea were drunk, latest babies shown off either in person or on photos, and they generally kept up to date with each other. Unfortunately many of these brothers and sisters are gone now, although we are glad that some remain.

Cynthia's passion was her family, and over several decades she traced her family tree right back to the 16th century. Once all sources of information were exhausted, she then started on husband Walter's family tree. In both cases, these investigations unearthed a formidable collection of photos, helped by the fact that at least three of the Roebuck brothers were expert photographers, and that both families had their photos taken at studios regularly.

After Cynthia's death, her children decided to make these photos available to the wider family. Thanks to computerisation we are able to scan them and publish them on this site, and we think that she would have approved. We hope that readers both from the wider family, and indeed family historians from outside it, will enjoy the photos on this site, and will send us feedback to this address (it isn't a hyperlink - please write it down):
