Newport Transporter Bridge

En route from the IDB offices to our first main stop, we found this interesting bridge, the Newport Transporter Bridge, or "Pont Lwyfan Casnewydd".  Built in 1906 to transport steelworkers across from Cardiff to the Lysaght steel works in Newport, it was refurbished in 1995.  It stands 75 m above the river, and can transport cars and bikes as well as people.  It was built to this design because of the great tidal range in this area - second highest in the world.

A detail of the right hand end, above, shows the gondola ready to go across with a car inside.  In practice these days, people use a newer permanent bridge just down-river.  There is however a society called Friends of the Newport Transporter Bridge, or FONT B, who help promote the bridge, and who have an interesting website.

(Not bad photography from a moving coach - it does deteriorate later!)
