Teatro Tasso

Back to main page

Built by the town's main patron, and refurbished in Art Deco style, this theatre mainly puts on folkloric shows for tourists, depicting the main music and dance of the area.  The theatre is comfortable, and air-conditioned, and on the top balcony you can dine while you watch. Adrian fixed this visit for us as an optional extra.

This first photo is from their leaflet:

Now, my pictures.  Took some fiddling with the camera settings, and still caught people's heads as I didn't dare stand up to take photos - I was the only one with a camera.  The cast numbered about 15, and were very professional.  Some were singers, others musicians, there was one comedian, and others who did a bit of each.  The lead male singer was a tenor with long red hair. The instrumentation was provided purely by a guitar, a violin and a mandolin, and the programme was various well-known Italian songs, sung entirely in Italian.  Culture vultures would be able to sing along with these, but not us...

After the performance, inadequately captured by the camera, a German male voice choir who had been in the audience suddenly struck up one of the songs, then another, and were still singing all the way out to the street.  The actual scene here was only lit by street lighting - well done camera - and you can see Sorrento bay and the lights of Naples in the distance.
