Food and Drink

This is a slightly different kind of page, as we couldn't go photographing everything we ate, particularly in the hotel. So I have illustrated the dishes where possible.

Prices in hotel (fairly cheap) - 1.5 Euro for ordinary coffee, 3 Euro for latte, 5 Euro for 400 ml local beer, 2.50 Euro for about 400 ml of cola.  Found out that Cola light is twice the price, or half the size, of ordinary.

Friday - lunch - tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad.  Similar to feta cheese and other goats milk cheeses, buffalo mozzarella will feature a lot!  Lemon gateau or creme caramel (aaaaagh!!) for dessert.

Friday - dinner - me - spaghetti in a fresh tomato sauce, this was the real thing!  Alun had grilled mackerel.  Nut gateau for dessert.

Saturday - lunch - me - my first pizza, pictured below, with Parma ham and Mozzarella cheese.

Also for Saturday lunch, Alun had anchovy salad, below.  The anchovy was pickled in brine, and gave him a raging thirst, so he said...

Saturday - tried chocolate ice cream from an ice cream parlour. Think this must have been factory made, not impressed.

Saturday dinner - me - Gnocci for starters, little shells of very starchy pasta.  Main course: grilled turkey steak, plus a bubble and squeak type thing and peas.  Quite nice.  Alun had real tomato soup, followed by lamb casserole (a bit ropey).

Sunday - lunch at a fast food joint outside Pompeii.  Very forgettable slice of standard pizza.  Orange Fanta was 2.50 Euro per can.

Sunday dinner - me - cannelloni for starters, breaded mozzarella for main course, baked cream for dessert (somewhere between a blancmange and the white part of caramel pudding).

Monday lunch - toasted "panini" (genuine Italian sandwich) containing prosciutto ham and more mozzarella.  Eaten in a posh trattoria in Capri town.  Hazelnut ice cream for dessert, better than first attempt.  Also discovered the local drink Lemon Soda, a cloudy lemonade.

Monday dinner - me - some sort of flat pasta with tomato sauce and cheese.  Alun had veal in tomato sauce.

Tuesday lunch - me - spaghetti carbonara, followed by tiramisu, eaten at the Foreigners Club in Sorrento.  Alun had bacon, egg and chips as was getting homesick.  The Foreigners Club is run by an Italian and an English person.

Wednesday - lunch - mozzarella, ham and salad panini put in the grill, in the only cafe open in the centre of Napoli on a bank holiday.

Thursday - lunch, pizzas at a proper pizzeria in Amalfi.  Mine shown below: Quattro stagioni, or four seasons, namely olives, ham, mushrooms and just cheese.

Here's Alun's pizza at the same place, billed as "sheep's cheese", with mushrooms.

Below: Yet another retail opportunity in Sorrento, the orangey coloured liqueur is peach, and the clear one orange.

The local Lemon Soda, only a couple of Euros, compared with 3 or 3.50 for cola.
