Aghia Marina

Aghia Marina resort, where we stayed, was really a coast road with accommodation, shops, bars etc down either side, and one block each side.  The village proper is up on the hill.

Just to confuse you, the first picture below is view is of higher Platanias, taken from the resort Platanias, the next village along.  Note on the right hand side of the street, in the distance, the white road train.  This was one of several trains which would take you on trips of up to several miles, even through the countryside.

Back in Aghia Marina, there are many pottery shops in the resorts, turning out traditional-style pottery for the tourists.  The problem would be getting it home!

Below: The beach at Aghia Marina, which gave the best view of Theodorou Island.  This island is only inhabited by the Kri-kri, a native ibex-type animal, which turned out to be very elusive.  You can not land on the island, and have to rely on very strong binoculars to see it.  A caretaker's hut is shown as a white speck in the middle of the island, and a few yards back from there, in the sea, is the wreck of a German warplane.  Locals say that the plane went into the sea further out, and got stuck in a trawler's net, others say that is not physically possible as it would break the net.  The plane is a favourite place for divers, but it has been so badly looted that there is little to see other than the airframe.  If you don't want to get wet, you can see it through a glass-bottomed boat from Chania.
