This fortress town has been walled since Roman times. The ruined walls seen today were built by the famous Italian civil engineer Michele Sanmicheli, between 1536 and 1568. The Turks breached these walls when taking the town in 1645, and made good the damage. Since then however, people have demolished the walls and taken the stone for other buildings, so only fragments remain. These photos are roughly in geographical order, starting at the old Venetian port end, and some more at the Naval Museum site.
