Greek Orthodox Church, Chania

Back to Crete 2004 page

Known by the locals as the Cathedral of Chania, or the "Trimartyri", it is dedicated to the Presentation of the Holy Virgin, to Saint Nicholas and to the Three Hierarchs.  It is situated in a square off Halidon Street, the main road to the port.  It has three naves, and is very elaborately decorated, with lots of beautiful chandeliers.

Below: the facade.  The three naves run behind these doors.

I like this shot (below), of the sun streaming through the clouds.  Like the effect on the palm trees too.

Various interior shots.  In this church, they don't mind photography, but they expect you to cover knees and shoulders, as in all holy places, and to show respect.

Below: people buy tin plaques showing parts of the body for which they want healing through the Virgin Mary.  They affix them here, light a candle and say a prayer asking for a miracle.
