Kalh Kardia bar and Cretan musicians, Chania

Back to Crete 2004 page

This bar was discovered some time ago by my brother, as being one where genuine, famous Cretan musicians play every night.  It is in Kondilaki Street, and to get to it, you go down Halidon Street to the port, turn left along the quayside, turn left back inland at the first opportunity, and it is most of the way up that street on the left.

The restaurant is run by members of the same family, and the Cretan musicians are called Pavlos and Asbasia.  A page devoted to them will appear at a later stage when more details have been researched.

Below: the bar.  As you can see, it does accommodation too, varying from pension to self contained studios.

Below: Asbasia and Pavlos when they were young.  Asbasia is playing a violin-type instrument called a lyra, and Pavlos a Cretan laouto - not to be confused with the Greek bouzouki.  This picture was a photocopy of an old black and white photo, this and the next two just photographed with my camera on "Copy" setting.

Below: Asbasia playing her lyra.

Below: A slightly more recent picture of Asbasia, again photographed with my camera.

Below, up to date again now, the staff, L-R Grigori, Artemi and Nikos.

Below, Pavlos the laouto player has a drink with Alun (alias Leandros)

Below: L-R Janette, Asbasia, Pavlos and Alun.  Photo taken by Nikos.

Below: Asbasia and Pavlos on their own.  These are the people in the old photos above.  (Sorry about the focus, using the only setting which will work in these conditions)
